About the project

A scholarly hypertext, recovered and renewed

The T. S. Eliot Hypertext Project was created by Arwin van Arum in 1998. This modern edition preserves that early web project while making its texts, annotations, sources, and images easier to read and explore today.

The original project

The project began in 1998 as a collection of interlinked HTML pages devoted to close reading of works by T. S. Eliot. Its structure reflects an early vision of the web as a scholarly medium.

Arwin van Arum is both the author of the original project and the editor of this modern edition.

Preservation and the modern edition

The recovered 1998 HTML is preserved separately as archival source material. It is not manually rewritten for this interface. A reproducible import process creates structured content, while the renderer supplies contemporary navigation, typography, accessibility, and metadata.

The modern edition uses ordinary static documents: works, annotations, references, and images each have a canonical page whose primary content is readable without JavaScript.

An edition in progress

Recovery does not resolve every missing image, broken external link, unclear title, or incomplete attribution. Corrections belong in the importer or editorial override layer so the historical source remains intact.

A future release may make the recovered original site available for direct consultation; it is not published in this edition.

Corrections

Readers are invited to report transcription errors, broken links, classification problems, or other corrections. Use “Report an issue” in a document footer; the report includes the page title, content identifier, type, and URL when a reporting destination is configured.
