The Story of St. Sebastian
in "Burbank with a Baedeker: Bleistein with a Cigar" and "The Love Song of St. Sebastian"

Sebastian was a Roman captain who secretly adhered the Christian faith. When this was discovered by the emperor, Diocletian, he ordered Sebastian to be assassinated by mercenary archers. Sebastian is said to have survived the arrows, however, and was restored to health by a Christian widow, Irene. He returned to accuse the emperor of cruelty, who then had him clubbed to death and dumped in a sewer. Through this story, St. Sebastian temporarily obtained the status of the first Christian martyr.

Salient detail is that in a television series (Millenium) there is an episode in which the mummified hand of St Sebastian appears as a talisman with magic powers - however possesses the hand will be the dominant political leader.
