Burbank with a Baedeker: Bleistein with a Cigar

This poem was first published in Arts and Letters, under the title "Bleistein with a Cigar" in the summer of 1919. Oddly enough, it was not finished in time for publication in the London edition of the Poems, which raises questions about its presumed date of composition, which is generally considered to be 1918. Also, in the letters a gradual change in perspective from Bleistein to Burbank takes place. Only in September 1919 (to Quinn) and afterwards does Eliot refer to the poem as "Burbank" - in all previous instances, the reference is to "Bleistein."
