[Eliot's note] "The barge she sat in, like a
burnish'd throne,/Burn'd on the water." In the
opening lines of this passage Eliot makes a lot of
references to Shakespeare's play, particularly the
following famous scene in which Enobarbus describes with
what kind of extravaganza Cleopatra first received
Antony. Eliot has mixed imagery from Shakespeare's play
with Dido's description in Virgil's Aeneid (see
below).
