V. Baudelaire, Preface to Fleurs du Mal. [Eliot's note] The passage is the last line of the introductory poem "Au Lecteur" ("To the Reader") in Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal. "Au Lecteur" describes man as sunk in stupidity, sin, and evil, but the worst in "each man's foul menagerie of sin" is boredom, the "monstre delicat" - "You know him, reader".
